Sonia Carole (Johnson) Asleson, age 67, of New Ulm died peacefully on Sunday, November 25, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her husband and two sons. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 29, 2012 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Jim Snyder officiating. Burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery in New Ulm. Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, NORTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Thursday.

Sonia is survived by her husband, Curt Asleson of New Ulm; sons, Leigh & Melissa (Brzozowski) Asleson (Isabelle & Sophia) of Mankato, & Ryan Asleson (Adam & Kylie) of Burnsville. She is also survived by her brother & sister-in-law, Harlan & Lois (Shope) of Mazeppa; and her sister & brother-in-law Betty (Johnson) and Perry Thompson of Hanska. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Sonia was preceded in death by her parents. Sonia Carole Johnson was born on March 17, 1945 in New Ulm to H. Clarence and Sadie (Ahlness) Johnson of Hanska. At age 6, the family moved to Mankato where Clarence worked at Hubbard Milling and Sadie was a teacher at Judson schools. Sonia attended Roosevelt Elementary from Kindergarten through 6th grade, attended Lincoln School for grades 7th through 9th and then attended high school at Mankato West High. Sonia received a Bachelor of Science degree from Mankato State College in Home Economics. She completed the 4 year course in just 3 years. In 1966, Sonia married Curtis (Curt) Asleson of New Ulm at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato and the couple had been happily married until her death. The couple had resided in New Ulm until 1971, then moving to their current location south of New Ulm. For seven years, Sonia worked for New Ulm Public School in the Home Economics department until she resigned to raise her children, Leigh & Ryan. In 1982, she joined Curt at New Ulm Precision Tool, which was started by Curt in 1974, as the Secretary/Treasurer & Office Manager until they sold the company in 2007 to the Specialty Manufacturing Company. Some of the highest points of Sonia’s life were those years at home raising her boys. She absolutely loved to travel with Curt and went on several trips over the years. In later years, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, Adam, Isabelle, Kylie & Sophia. She enjoyed spending family time at their lake cabin in Backus and enjoyed decorating both of her homes, often decorating to a theme. Sonia enjoyed collecting Depression-era glass and preparing large meals for her family over the Holidays. She had been a Sunday school teacher in the past at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Sonia was loved & cherished and will be greatly missed, as she touched so many lives without asking for anything in return. Memorials are prefered to American Cancer Society.WWW.MVFH.org
