James “Jim” Weisensel, 83, of New Ulm died Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Thursday, January 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm with Monsignor Douglas Grams celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4-8 pm Wednesday and 7:30-10 am Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm. The Knight of Columbus will pray the rosary at 6 pm and there will be a parish prayer service at 7 pm, both at the funeral home on Wednesday.

Jim is survived by his wife, Clarice Weisensel of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Joe Blickem; Bonnie Weisensel, all of New Ulm; Nancy Silbaugh of Onalaska, Wisconsin; Lisa and Jim Kretsch; Michelle and Kenny Guggisberg, all of New Ulm; grandchildren, Megan Blickem, Alex Blickem, both of New Ulm, Nicole Kretsch and fiancé, Joe Hamann, of Lafayette; Chelsea Kretsch of New Ulm; great grandchildren, Malakai, Messiah, and Bentleigh; sisters and brothers, Jerome Weisensel of Winthrop, Shirley (Rudy) Vait of Sauk Centre, Audrey Hofmeister of Bemidji, Beverly Sellner of Comfrey; in-laws, Joe (Joyce) Neid of Sleepy Eye, Donna (Albert) Ebnel, Marion Augustin, Sandy Windschitl, Edwin J (Marilyn) Windschitl, all of Springfield, Hildegard Housgard of Mankato, Delores Filzen of Gaylord, Janet (Dick) Earl, Sal (Bev) Windschitl, all of New Ulm; and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Michael Silbaugh; brothers, LeRoy and Kenneth Weisensel; sister, Elaine Neid; in-laws, Mary Lou Weisensel, George Sellner, Ralph Hofmeister, Alfred Windschitl, Larry (Sylvia) Windschitl, Erwin Filzen, Perry Augustin, and Lucille (Marvin) Wall.

James R. Weisensel was born August 17, 1929 in New Ulm to John Martin and Isabel (Jutz) Weisensel. He grew up on the farm near Swan Lake and attended Nicollet Country School. Jim was inducted into the army on February 22, 1951 and served two years in the artillery in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on January 15, 1953. On October 5, 1954, Jim was united in marriage to Clarice Windschitl at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. After marriage, he worked on a farm in Morgan. In 1956, they moved to Sleepy Eye where Jim worked at the Creamery for nine years. In 1966, they moved to New Ulm where he worked as a foreman for AMPI for over thirty years. He retired in 1991.

Jim was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus since 1958, and the American Legion in New Ulm. He enjoyed camping, fishing, watching sports, playing bingo, farming, and spending time with his family and friends. Jim was a great handyman and liked helping others. He will be greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, and his family.
