Phyllis Zimmermann, 69, of New Ulm died Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the New Ulm Medical Center. Funeral service will be 11 am Friday, February 15 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Wayne Laitinen officiating. Private interment at the New Ulm City Cemetery Columbarium will follow at a later date. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the time of the service at the church on Friday. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is handling the arrangements.

Phyllis Ida Augusta Krueger was born March 3, 1943 at her parents’ home in rural Hamilton Township, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin. She was the second child and first daughter of Walter and Mabel (Niedfeldt) Krueger. Phyllis attended grade school in West Salem, Wisconsin and St. Paul’s School in Bangor, Wisonsin. She attended Luther High School in Onalaska, Wisonsin where she was a member of the school’s first graduating class in 1961. Phyllis went to college at DMLC in New Ulm where she graduated with a three year teaching certificate in 1964.

Phyllis was called by the WELS to teach 2nd and 3rd grade at East Fork Lutheran School in Whiteriver, Arizona. At East Fork, Phyllis met her future husband, Nelson Zimmermann. They were married July 31, 1966 at St. Paul’s Church in Bangor, Wisconsin. After marriage, Phyllis taught for a year and then began, what was to be the great love of her life, working at the East Fork Lutheran Nursery: a child care facility connected with the East Fork Mission and WELS. The Zimmermanns had eight children. In 1990, Phyllis and Nelson moved to Cibecue, Arizona, where Phyllis taught the lower grades of the mission school on a volunteer basis. In 1996, the family relocated to Sanborn. Phyllis worked for a number of years in the kitchen of the Valley View Manor in Lamberton. In 2004, Phyllis and Nelson retired to New Ulm.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Nelson Zimmermann of New Ulm; children, Natalie (Daniel) Borgwardt of New Ulm, Patrick Zimmermann of Pinetop, Arizona, Monica Zimmermann of Chicago, Illinois, Seth (Heidi) Zimmermann of White Bear Lake, Ina Zimmermann of Chicago, Illinois, Melissa (Jim) Widmer of Redwood Falls, Jacob (Sarah) Zimmermann of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Marion Standing of New Ulm; twelve grandchildren; brothers, LaVerne Krueger of Bangor, Wisconsin, Tim (Mary) Krueger of Sparta, Wisconsin, Michael Krueger of Sparta, Wisconsin; and sister, Ila Krueger of Rocky Point, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents; mother and father-in-law, R.H. and Ina Zimmermann; and sister-in-law, Carol Krueger.

Phyllis was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm and was a longtime supporter of the WELS Mission and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society (LWMS). In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the LWMS.
