NEW ULM

Catherine E. Meidl, 96, of New Ulm died Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity with Father Gerald Meidl celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. Friday and from 7:30 – 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, NORTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm. There will be a St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth Catholic United rosary at 6:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Christian Mothers Society will pray the rosary at 4:00 p.m. Friday at the Cathedral.

Catherine is survived by special caregiver niece, Joanne Schugel of New Ulm; sister-in-law, RoseMarie Zins of New Ulm; and many nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond M. Meidl on December 1, 1978; sisters, Loretta Walters, Josephine Nelson, Anna Zins, Louise Penkert, Lucy Reinhart; brothers, Ray, Ben, Tony, Charles, Lawrence, Hubert, and Joseph Zins.

Catherine Eleanor Zins was born on July 3, 1916 in Nicollet County to William and Elizabeth (Machtemes) Zins. She attended Granby country school and graduated from Nicollet High School in 1932 at the age of 16. Before marriage she worked for the WearWell Garment Factory and the Ben Franklin store in New Ulm while helping her sisters care for her nieces and nephews. On September 1, 1938, Catherine was united in marriage to Raymond M. Meidl at the Visitation Catholic Church at Swan Lake, Nicollet County. After marriage she was a full time housewife and active in her church. She held many memberships in Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, St. Elizabeth Catholic Aid Society, Legion of Mary, and Christian Mothers Society where she was a banner bearer for 15 years and finance secretary for 17 years. Catherine belonged to the Golden Age Club, Loretto Hospital Auxiliary having worked in the Good Bye & Coffee Shop for many years. She was proud to be a frequent Red Cross blood donor. In 2005, Catherine moved to Ridgeway on German and in 2007 she became a resident of Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Catherine enjoyed traveling, bingo, playing cards, crafts, gardening, and taking care of her lawn. In July, 1981, Catherine received the New Ulm Journals’s award for “Best Yard of the Month”. www.mvfh.org.
