Obituary

Arthur J. Schulz, age 91, died on November 9, 2020, at Woodstone Senior Living in New Ulm, Minnesota. He was born on June 22, 1929, in Winona, Minnesota, to Arthur and Hilda (Brand) Schulz. He was baptized and confirmed by Pastor Alfred W. Sauer of St. Martin Lutheran Church in Winona. Arthur attended that congregation's Lutheran elementary school. In 1947, he graduated from Dr. Martin Luther High School in New Ulm, Minnesota, and received a teaching diploma from Dr. Martin Luther College in 1950. He was assigned to Mt. Lebanon Lutheran School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he served as upper grade teacher and principal.

Arthur was united in marriage with Joyce Hanke on August 5, 1951, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Norton Township, Winona County, Minnesota.

In 1957, he was called to Dr. Martin Luther College (DMLC) to serve as professor of education. While at DMLC, he continued his education, receiving baccalaureate degrees from DMLC and Mankato State University (MSU), a master's degree from MSU, and a doctorate in education from the University of Minnesota. Until his retirement in 2002, he served DMLC and Martin Luther College in various administrative positions.

After retirement, Arthur and Joyce lived for a year in Lusaka, Zambia, training Sunday school teachers for the Lutheran Church of Africa. For many years, he also participated in the Gospel ministry of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in New Ulm, teaching Bible classes and visiting shut-ins.

Arthur is survived by Joyce, his wife of 69 years. They were blessed with daughters Deborah (Don) Johnson of Rochester, Minnesota; Ruth (John) Paisley of Falcon Heights, Minnesota; Rebekah (Dan) Jaehnig of Phoenix, Arizona; Sarah (James) Mielke of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota; Mary (Alan) Landers of Missoula, Montana; and Rachel Albrecht of Fountain Hills, Arizona; as well as seventeen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brother-in-law Willis (Geri) Hanke of Brainerd, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Fred, Mike, and Willard (in infancy) and his sister Marion.
