Obituary

Bonita "Bonnie" Bastian, age 85, of New Ulm, died on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at Woodstone Senior Living in New Ulm.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the St. George Catholic Church in St. George, with Father Mark Steffl celebrating the mass. Burial will follow in the St. George Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Thursday, December 19 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home - NORTH Chapel in New Ulm. The visitation will continue from 10-11 am on Friday at the church in St. George.

Bonnie is survived by her husband, Wally; sons, Brian Bastian of St. Cloud and Allan Bastian of Shakopee; two grandchildren, Claire (Tyler) Hauser of Buffalo, MN and Katherine Bastian of Monticello; great-grandchild, Thatcher Hauser; sisters, Shirley Krohn, Margaret (Thomas) Albrecht, Sharon Madsen, Lois (Robert) Schneider, and Norma (DJ) Bergseth; brother, Howard Altmann; and brothers-in-law, Thomas Fromm and Robert Imker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Helen Fromm and Joanne Imker; and brothers-in-law, Bob Madsen and Bill Krohn.

Bonita Louise Altmann was born on August 23, 1939 in New Ulm to Marvin & Helen (Reitter) Altmann. She attended grade school in Nicollet County in District 51 and then graduated from New Ulm High School in 1957.  Bonnie started her career at Loretto Hospital in New Ulm in 1957, and retired from the New Ulm Medical Center in 2005. She was united in marriage to Wallace "Wally" Bastian on June 7, 1962 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. Bonnie was a member of St. George Catholic Church, CCW, CAA, Klossner Water Association, Nicollet County Home Extension, and the New Ulm Medical Center Auxiliary. She loved spending time in and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, and entertaining her family and friends at her home. Bonnie also enjoyed fishing, camping, needlepoint, and doing crafts with her grandchildren. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren. Blessed be her memory.
