Bonita Gail (Gaslin) Compart was born on April 28, 1937, daughter of Merle and Arlene (Wirz) Gaslin in Anoka, MN. Bonnie met Richard Compart of Nicollet, at the MN State Fair 4-H hog shows. She was showing her purebred Hampshire pig and he was showing a purebred Duroc pig. She graduated from St. Francis High School in 1955. On October 8, 1955, she married Richard at the Methodist Church in Anoka, MN. After high school graduation, she worked for John Deere in Mpls. Richard went on active duty in the Army immediately after the wedding. Bonnie went with Richard to San Antonio, TX, Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, MD, and Ft. Campbell, KY, where she quickly found a job at each location. They returned to his home farm at Nicollet in 1957. When Richard and Bonnie returned to the farm, they concentrated their efforts on the purebred hogs and eventually sold the dairy cows. Those 4-H swine projects turned into a large purebred hog operation they named Comparts Boar Store as the sons' interest in the business grew.
Her biggest contribution to the business was selling boars and gilts. Bonnie was the elite salesperson: knowing the customers, remembering 4-generation pedigrees on each animal, reminding customers what they had bought the last couple of years, and selling the vast majority of the on-farm sales for many years. She would be out in the boar pens with the customers, requesting the boys to bring her more boars to sell, or on the phone always with a pencil tucked behind her right ear. She would often make deliveries too, inviting a girlfriend along to accompany her for the day. Bonnie was a champion at backing a truck and trailer.
Bonnie had learned shorthand in high school, and she often left notes around the house and shed to remind family of events, customer appts, meal times, etc. But it got tricky when part of the note was in shorthand. She enjoyed baking pies and donated many to fundraisers at church and school. Custard, strawberry and apple pies were her favorites. She was a doting mother and grandma and never missed a birthday or anniversary with a card.
Bonnie is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Nicollet, and very active with the Ladies Guild where she chaired numerous committees and events like the annual Ice Cream Social and blood drive. She was also active in county Extension groups. She was a member of the Nicollet County Pork Producers, and a founding member of the MN Porkette Association for women. Bonnie was a member of the area Couples Club and a Legion Auxiliary member.
Richard and Bonnie were both inducted into the MN Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame in 1993. After Richard's death in 2012 she eventually backed away from the family business and enjoyed playing cards with different groups in St. Peter. She divided her time between the farm house and the lake home on Lake Washington by St. Peter. It was often said by the family that they only saw tail lights as Bonnie drove down the road to participate in some activity with family or friends. She donated the Compart Pavilion at the Nicollet County Fairgrounds for 4-H and community use in memory of husband Richard.
