James "Jim" L. Hartten, age 85 of New Ulm died unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at his home in New Ulm.

A prayer service will take place at 11 am on Friday, September 9, 2022, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home-South Chapel in New Ulm. Father Josh Bot will officiate, and burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

Full military honors will be provided by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.

A visitation will be held from 10-11 am on Friday at the funeral home prior to the prayer service.

A luncheon reception will be held at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home-South Chapel following the burial service.  Guests in attendance at the reception are kindly asked to wear a mask for safety.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Hartten of New Ulm; his daughters, Catherine and Christine Hartten of New Ulm; his son, Randy (Ron Lotz) Hartten of Minneapolis; and his aunt, Lois Bode of Mankato.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Hartten, his mother and step-father, Lucille and Arthur Rickers; mother and father-in-law, Arline and Vernon Bieraugel; his step-mother-in-law, Arlene Bieraguel; and son-in-law, Bashir Stamboulieh.

James "Jim" Louis Hartten was born June 16, 1937, in Rochester to Harry and Lucille (Hahn) Hartten.  He was a 1955 graduate from Holy Trinity High School.  Soon after graduation, Jim proudly served his country with the U.S. Army from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1958.  He was united in marriage to Mary Bieraugel on February 20, 1960, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm.  This union blessed the couple with two daughters and a son whom together they raised in New Ulm.  Early in his life, Jim worked for the Brown County Highway Department for a short time before beginning his 26-year career at Supersweet Feeds.  After the plants closure, Jim went to work for the City of New Ulm where he worked in maintenance at Vogel Area as well as the Zamboni driver at the civic center before his retirement in 1999.  Besides work, there were a variety of hobbies Jim had in life including his love for finding a good deal at flea markets, and collecting memorabilia.  To relax in the summers, Jim always enjoyed spending time tending to his wonderful gardens at his home.  As a gifted wood worker, Jim also dearly enjoyed finding and refinishing antique furniture.  He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm where he was active with the Catholic United.  He will be dearly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.  Blessed be his memory.
