Obituary

James "Jim" A. Hogen, age 82 of New Ulm - Goosetown died peacefully on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at the St. John Circle of Care in Springfield.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 15, 2024, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm.  Father Gerald Meidl will celebrate the Mass. A private family ennichement will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery Columbarium at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, January 14, 2024, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – North Chapel in New Ulm. Visitation will continue from 10-11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm.

Livestreaming of the Mass will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, January 15, 2024 on the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home Facebook page.

James is survived by his loving wife, Susan Hogen of New Ulm; his children, Vicky (Ed) Bode of New Ulm,  Ricky (Renee) Hogen of Jordan, Lisa (Tom) Bacon of Arlington, SD, Daniel (Rachelle) Schultz of New Ulm; his eleven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Olive Goldschmidt of Hutchinson; his sister, Dorothy Setser of California; his brother, John Hogen of Shakopee; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Gerald Goldschmidt; his sister-in-law, Joyce Hogen; and his brother-in-law, Robert Setser.

James Anton Hogen was born November 18, 1941, in New Ulm, Minnesota to Carl and Loretta (Stippel) Hogen.  Growing up in New Ulm, Jim attended New Ulm public school with the class of 1959.  Jim was later united in marriage to Susan Goldschmidt on February 14, 1993, in Las Vegas.  Jim worked a long and dedicated 37-year career at 3M in New Ulm before his retirement in 2002.  As a man who enjoyed staying busy, there were a variety of ways he gave his time back to his community.  He served for many years on the New Ulm City Planning Commission, Public Utilities Commission, Police Commission, Planning and Zoning Commission, New Ulm City Cemetery Board, as well as the RENU Committee and earning the Brown County Senior Citizen Award in 2015.  James also volunteered locally with Meals on Wheels and the Hospital Auxiliary.   Jim was a devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm where he regularly volunteered as a church usher.  As a proud member of the New Ulm Country Club, to relax, Jim always enjoyed a good round of golf with family or friends. He also enjoyed bowling, where he was inducted in the hall of fame in 1993. He enjoyed playing sheephead, getting coffee at the Ulmer Café, and the nine years he was able to winter in Mesa, Arizona with his many close friends.
