Janet A.
Schuetze
January 14, 1931 – October 8, 2022
The Lord called Janet home on October 8, 2022. Janet and her twin sister, Lespa, were born on January 14, 1931 in New Orleans, Louisiana. They attended Sophie B. Wright High School in New Orleans, an all girls school where Janet was president of the class.
She was employed as a statistical typist before she married Martin and was able to type financial reports at 120 words per minute. When Martin was attending law school at night, Janet transcribed all of his dictated law school notes.
Janet's strong faith guided her throughout her life. She was actively involved in the church in a variety of ways, including as a youth counsellor, Sunday school teacher, and strong proponent of Lutheran day schools. She was passionate about reading and helped many children learn to read. Janet was active in evangelism and didn't hesitate to profess her faith. Even while in hospice, she would tell the caregivers that God loves them.
Janet had many hobbies. She quilted for nearly 40 years and was a co-founder of the Dakota County Quilters, past president of the Minnesota Star Quilters, and organized many quilting retreats. She also won several gold ribbons at quilt shows. When Martin and Janet built their retirement home in Eagan, they designed a quilt room where Janet would quilt into the wee hours of the night.
Janet was an avid reader of history books and she almost always knew the answers to even the most challenging questions on Jeopardy. She carried on the traditions of New Orleans in her cooking – red beans and rice on Monday nights, black eye peas on New Year's Day for good luck, king cake on Fat Tuesday, grits for breakfast, and shrimp creole and gumbo for dinner. She also enjoyed traveling around the world with Martin, spending time with her grandchildren, and square dancing when her kids were young.
Janet had an innate ability to draw strong connections with people. She frequently became friends with strangers on airplanes and learned their life stories and struggles by the time they landed. She went out of her way to welcome visitors to the church and made them feel like they were part of the congregation.
Janet is predeceased by her parents, Harold and Irma Jordy, and twin sister, Lespa (Jordy) Luft. She is survived by Martin Schuetze, her husband of 60 years; her children, Bryan (Anna Kunz) Schuetze, Heidi (John) Walewander, and step daughter, Nadine (Roy) Alvarado; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, brother-in-law, George Luft, and a number of nieces and nephews.
