John Mowan, 87, of New Ulm died Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Pheasant's Ridge Memory Care in St. Peter.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM Thursday, May 2, 2024 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Father Gerald Meidl celebrating the Mass. Inurnment will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place at Turner Hall following the inurnment at the cemetery.

John is survived by his son, Jon Mowan of New Ulm; daughters, Kim (Jaime) of Tampa, Florida, Lea Mowan of Minneapolis, Tracy (Craig) Beckman of New Ulm; grandchildren, Brittany and Nicholas; great grandchild Reagan; and a brother, Richard (Dody) Mowan of Motley. .
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert; and a sister in infancy.
John William Mowan was born September 26, 1936 in Pine River to Jay and Mary (Vosen) Mowan. He was a graduate of Grand Marais High School and Mankato State. John was united in marriage to Ruth Bartl at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm and they later divorced. He was employed as a teacher and coach at Royalton High School then Cathedral High School in New Ulm as a history teacher, Dean of Students and coach. John owned the Eagles Nest Bar in Eagle Lake for a year and then Mowan's Bar in New Ulm until his retirement in 1999. He was a 20 year member of the New Ulm Fire Department. John had many hobbies that included fishing, hunting, bowling, watching old westerns and war movies, listening to old country music, refereeing high school basketball games, libations with his friends and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
