Obituary

LeRoy N. Levorson, 91, of New Ulm, died on Tuesday, June 02, 2026 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Funeral service will be 11 AM, Friday, July 3, 2026, at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – NORTH Chapel in New Ulm. Interment will be at 4 PM the same day at the Somber Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Lake Mills, Iowa.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – NORTH Chapel on Friday.

LeRoy Norman Levorson was born October 15, 1934 to Albin and Hannah (Engelstadt) Levorson on the family farm in Worth County, Iowa. He was the oldest of five children, and attended a rural one room school through eighth grade.

LeRoy was baptized and confirmed at Somber Lutheran Church. He graduated from Dr. Martin Luther High School in New Ulm, Minnesota in 1952 and earned an associate degree at Bethany Lutheran College in 1954. He graduated from Dr Martin Luther College in 1958 with a bachelor degree in education. Continuing his life long pursuit of learning, he earned a Master’s degree from Winona State University in 1968, with additional graduate coursework at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

In 1958 he married Mary Jo Thompson. They raised four children – Steven, Kirsten, James, and Sarah.

LeRoy enjoyed a long and varied career in education, serving in elementary schools in Princeton, Minnesota; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Lake City, Minnesota; and Winona, Minnesota. In 1968 he joined the faculty of Dr Martin Luther College in New Ulm. The college was later renamed Martin Luther College. LeRoy retired in 2004. His students remember him as an engaging teacher. He enjoyed teaching 20th century American history and literature, and later in his career added Russian language and history as an area of focus. He traveled to Russia/Soviet Union seven times to increase his understanding of the people and culture.

In retirement, he found ways to serve his community through the Lions organization both locally and regionally. He found a particular passion for the Lions Vision Foundation, partly due to his own loss of vision. He was a regular volunteer at annual Fly In Breakfasts and other fundraising events for almost 25 years.

LeRoy is survived by his wife Mary Jo; children and their spouses, Steven and Janice Levorson of Overland Park, Kansas; Kirsten Levorson and Bruce Feld of Rosemount, Minnesota; James Levorson of New Ulm, Minnesota; Sarah Levorson of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Grand children include Erica, Sam, Anna, Christopher, Mari, Emily, Jon, Nikki, and Sarunas. He is also survived by brothers Irwin of Adel, Iowa; Paul and Helen of Oakfield, Wisconsin; sister Ruth of Lake Mills, Iowa, and nieces and nephews Matthew, Peter, Jerome, David, Patty, Lisa, Dana, Michael, David, Keith and another generation of grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Albin, Sr. and Hannah Levorson, and brother Albin (Red) Levorson.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lions Vision Foundation or to the Levorson Family Scholarship Fund at Bethany Lutheran College.
