Obituary

Mary Ann Hussman, age 85, of New Ulm, MN was called by her Savior to her heavenly home on July 13, 2024, after a battle with cancer.

Mary was born on November 11, 1938 to Henry and Hilda Blievernicht (Biesterfeld). She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crete, IL which began more than 50 years of involvement at Trinity, across the street from her family home. She was a bonus member of Pastor Kretzmann's family which inspired Christian ministry throughout her life and family.

She attended Trinity Lutheran School in a class with her future husband, Charles Hussman. Together they attended Crete Monee High School. She then attended Concordia Teacher's College in River Forest, IL. After graduating she taught in Lutheran schools in St. Louis, MO and Mattoon, IL.

She married Charles Hussman at Trinity on August 6, 1960 and together they were blessed with 64 years of marriage and four children: David, James, Peter and Mary Lynn. Her life was one of Christian service in church and community. She was a constant volunteer, eventually joining the faculty at Trinity and later Illinois Lutheran High School, where she loved to teach Latin. She served the Crete community as a board member and president of the Crete Park District. And she was a supportive coach's wife to her husband's high school football teams.

In 1992 she and Chuck brought their family to New Ulm, MN where he began serving at Dr. Martin Luther College, now Martin Luther College. Again, she became very involved as a coach's wife, volunteer from MLC to New Ulm parks, and a regular volunteer at St. John's Lutheran Church and New Ulm's Treasure Haus, where we think she bought most of the goods for her grandchildren.

In 1994 they followed their dream to purchase a cabin on the edge of the Boundary Waters on the Gunflint Trail in Northern Minnesota. For 30 years they have enjoyed the peace and beauty of God's creation with family and friends. When it was too cold to visit the cabin they became regular visitors to Disney World and their children's places of ministry. Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Chuck, and her children David (Karen), James (Renee), Peter, and Mary (Jon Plocher). Following her example all have served in different ways in Lutheran ministry.

She is further survived by her grandchildren, Samantha (Paul), Rebecca, Christina (Zachary), Ashley (Jarod), Andrew (Alyssa), Adam (Caity), Emma (Ethan), Jacob (Michelle), Jonah (Amanda), and Anna. She has 6 great grandchildren: Braylon, Amara, Justus, Clary, August and Ella. She is further survived by her sister Virginia Boicken, her sister-in-law, Delores Blievernicht, her brothers Richard (Leah Rae) and David (Jean) Blievernicht, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and former students.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Hilda, her in-laws, Jacob and Edna, her brother Norman, in-laws Howard and Loretta Hussman, brother-in law Glenn Boicken, and other relatives.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church and Martin Luther College.
