Richard A. Hanel, age 78 of North Mankato, died on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

A visitation will be on Friday, June 5, 2026 from 11am - 2pm in the Fireside Room of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Mankato, followed by a private graveside service.

Richard Allen Hanel was born July 7, 1947, to Bruno and Margaret (Statham) Hanel in Mankato, Minnesota. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1965. He married Linda Kjolstad in 1966. They had two children and later divorced. In 1987 he married Joy (Grunst) Anderson. He worked at North Star Concrete for 27 years and at Cargill for 13 years. Dick was an amazingly skilled, self-taught woodworker, handyman, and gardener. He would read, research, Google it. And he was a quiet, humble man. Dick is survived by his wife Joy, daughter Dawn (Kullen) Stanek of Tyler and son Jeremy (Brenda) Hanel of North Mankato; stepdaughters Shannon (Matt) Zebro of Wells and Lexi King of Waukee, IA; 12 grandchildren, Kelsey (Taylor) Brust, Sarah (Corey) Castell & Abby Stanek, Sydney, Cameron, & Hayden Hanel; Samuel, Lauren, Macy & Maya Zebro, George & Vivian King; great grandchildren, Lauren, Lane, Allie, & Adalyn Brust, Charlotte Castell. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Carol Hanel, Marie Hanel, and Mary Lou Hanel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruno in 1953 and Margaret in 1985; sister, Barbara Hanel in 1992; brothers, Harold in 2015, Loren in 2020, and Donald in 2026.
