Obituary

Ruth V. Anderson, longtime resident of New Ulm, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at the age of 96.

Ruth was born May 4, 1930, in Solon, Iowa, to Charles and Helen Vornholt. Her early years were filled with music – piano lessons, playing for church, and playing at local dances with her parents and uncle. She also had many duties on the family farm, and attended a one room schoolhouse until 8th grade, after which she went to Cedar Rapids for high school.

After high school, Ruth continued her education at the University of Iowa, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in music and a Master of Fine Arts in piano performance. She came to New Ulm in 1953, where she taught piano at DMLC for 11 years before starting her own private studio. Here she met music Professor Ames Anderson; they were married in 1962 and enjoyed 52 years of music and adventuring together. They loved to read, travel, attend concerts and operas, and play bridge. Ruth loved her football! (Go Hawkeyes!)

Ruth was a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music and was very active in the Minnesota Music Teachers Association. She joined MMTA in 1969 and held offices of President, Vice President for Conventions, and Secretary, as well as numerous committees at both local and national levels. She retired from teaching in her 70s. Ruth is a charter supporter of the Summit Avenue Music Series (now Pro Musica Minnesota), founded in 2016 to bring performances of professional musicians to Martin Luther College.

In addition to music, Ruth was an Oregon Trail aficionado. She was a charter member of the Oregon-California Trails Association, founded in 1982, where she has had several articles and a book published.

Ruth is survived by her daughter Greta (Nehrenberg), sister Retha (Keenan), and grandson Zach (Nehrenberg). She is preceded in death by husband Ames and grandson Dylan.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pro Musica Minnesota, Oregon-California Trails Association, or donor’s choice. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, at 12pm at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, South Chapel. A visitation will be held from 11:30am to 12pm prior to the service.
