Obituary

NEW ULM

Jerome "Jerry" Harmening, 92, of New Ulm died Monday, February 15, 2016 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Debra Bergstrand officiating. Burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. Friday and from 7:30 – 8: 30 a.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, SOUTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Saturday.

Jerome is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Karen Harmening of Brainerd, Steve and Lynn Harmening of New Ulm; grandchildren, Estelle Paulson, Angela (Chad) Reid, Tony (Michele) Harmening, Jennifer (Dan) Thiede, Kelly (Brian) Binsfeld; seven great grandchildren and one on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bernice 'Bernie" Harmening on October 29, 2014; and a sister, Lucille Mack.

Jerome Paul Harmening was born on May 20, 1923 in Courtland Township, Nicollet County to Paul and Viola (Schroeder) Harmening. He attended grade school and high school in New Ulm. After graduation he went to Omaha, Nebraska to Frey Aircraft School. After graduation he worked at the Glenn L. Martin aircraft plant. He never forgot working on the Enola Gay. In 1946 he married Bernice Madsen at Trinity Lutheran Church on Rutland, Iowa. They returned to New Ulm and went into the petroleum business. In 1946 he started Harmening Oil which he later sold to his sons. Jerome enjoyed many years of bowling, golfing, and playing cards with his friends. He loved his family very much. Jerome was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm, New Ulm Lions Club for twenty nine years, and was a former member of the New Ulm Farm City Hub Club. Memorials are preferred to Our Savior's Lutheran Church or the donor's choice. www.mvfh.org
