Norm is survived by Lois Barrer his wife of 66 years; children, Bryan (Paula) Barrer of Merrifield, Dawn Barrett of Mankato, Gary (Bonnie) Barrer of Nicollet, Steve Barrer of Nicollet, Tom Barrer (friend Michelle) of Chaska, Angie (Jeff) Bode of Nicollet; his 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren with another due in December; and his nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Carmen and her husband Severin Springer; and his brother, Darwin.
Norm was born July 31, 1932, in Delavan, Minnesota to Fabian and Margaret (Barrett) Barrer. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953-55. On April 24, 1954, Norm was united in marriage to Lois Ulrich at Zion Lutheran Church in Brighton Township. This union blessed the couple with four sons and two daughters who they raised together in Nicollet.
Norm worked as an electrician at Mankato Electric for most of his career before retiring in 1996. Besides his work, there were a variety of hobbies he enjoyed in life. As a well-known jack-of-all trades, there was very little Norm could not do or fix. He was always there for his family as well as anyone in need of help when it came to repairs. Norm became a skilled woodworker from the shop in his garage. He enjoyed gardening and generously sharing his produce with others. Spending time at the cabin (that he built) provided many family memories. As a man loyal to his community, Norm gave back by serving with the Nicollet Lions Club as well as with the Nicollet Fire Department. He also loved cheering for and supporting his family & grandkids at their school sporting events. Norm was a faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Nicollet where he served on the school board as well as church council. He also served on the Nicollet Public School board as well. Norm was most proud of the family he helped raise. He enjoyed every moment he got to spend with them and especially loved seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Blessed be his memory.
